Freeze Drying / Lyophilization Info Online
This site is dedicated to advancing the understanding of freeze drying/lyophilization
for biotech, pharmaceutical, and industrial products (not food products).
Although the process of freeze drying has been used for a significant period of
time, it is difficult to find a central location for information. This site attempts to fulfill
the needs of those looking for resources for freeze drying.

What is freeze drying?
Removal of water (and other solvents) from a frozen material by sublimation and
desorption. The process consists of three separate, unique, and interdependent
processes: freezing, primary drying (sublimation), and secondary drying (desorption).
Why freeze dry?
To extend the shelf life of a product.
To stabilize a product, making it easier to transport and less sensitive to temperature.
To produce a product that can be fully reconstituted (IE: for injection).
